James Tatum

James Tatum

James Tatum was born in 1944 and had early interests in drawing, writing, photography, and architecture. After a formal education in English, History and Philosophy he began a long career in industrial design, engineering, and manufacturing in Canada but still found time to draw and paint during his  travels. He moved from Canada to the U.K. in 1987 and in 2007 moved from London to Devon in order to paint full time.

In March 2014 he was elected Academician, The South West Academy (SWAc). He exhibits regularly with the South West Academy and is represented by several galleries in the U.K. from Kent to Cornwall as well as in Holland and Switzerland.

James primarily paints expressionistic landscapes of the West Country and wherever his travels take him. All his paintings begin en plein air and the larger works are then completed in a studio. His paintings are concerned with balancing close observation and structure with emotional, visceral responses to the landscape. His goal is to make paintings which are physically exciting and therefore, involve experiment and risk taking.

Title of Course:  The Landscape as Power and Emotion

Over many years of teaching I have developed a three-step process of making paintings that allows making the right decisions at the right stage of the process. My approach begins with gathering the information you need with drawings done en plein air. The second step involves simplification of the information by making studies.  The third step is the actual making of exciting paintings from the information that you have collected and distilled.

During the week's course we will be showing you the basic tools that you can use to make dramatic, powerful landscape paintings. We will begin with drawing in the landscape with the idea of making strong, independent statements beyond mere representations that may provoke a viewer's emotional responses. Emphasis will be on finding the structure in the landscape, designing exciting compositions, exploring the complete tonal range and finally, usually colour to trigger emotion.

We will be using acrylics and mixed media (crayon, ink, collage, etc.) to make authentic, expressive paintings. The focus will be on transforming the outside reality that one sees into a new visual experience, a painting!

My focus is to teach you how to take your personal responses to the landscape and then to make paintings that are physically exciting and convey what it felt like to be in a particular place at a particular time.
